It's not just the younger son who's alienated from his Father. Both the older and the younger want the father's stuff but not the father. Jesus tells this story to illustrate how we tell God to rack off so we can get on with being our own bosses. You'll never read the prodigal son parable the same way again. The Father's joy Luke 15:1-10

Jesus teaches his followers to check their own hearts. As he goes to his death in Jerusalem, he urges them to recognise their own need for mercy from God and to ensure they are people who 'do mercy'. Big conflict, small wisdom Luke 12:49-59

Why did Jesus come to earth? Not to bring peace he said. He came to bring a fire, and to undergo a baptism. Heeded warning; happy servants Luke 12:35-48
February 06, 2011 04:05 AM PST
Luke 12-13 contains a number of warnings. Warnings against hypocrisy, against primarily worrying about material things rather than the kingdom of God, and, in this week's passage, warnings against growing complacent or selfish. Seriously important for the disciple of Jesus. Big investment; no worries Luke 12:13-34

As Jesus heads towards Jerusalem, he teaches his followers what it means to follow him. If we are willing, we can learn how to be his followers too. The real Jesus Luke 11:1-13
November 28, 2010 05:23 PM PST
With sermon we resume our look at Luke's gospel. Jesus has made his mark - incredible healings, confrontations with demons, the forces of nature, and people. And in each situation, Jesus is shown to be someone unique. Unique in power, but more than that, unique in authority. For he wields his power in obedience to his Father and for the good of others. In Luke 9:52, Jesus turns his face towards Jerusalem, and with his followers surrounding him, begins his journey to his death. The conflict with the religious leaders escalates. The following crowds don't get that has to go to Jerusalem to die. Even his disciples are too dull to understand. It's about three years that the disciples have been following him. And finally, it seems, they realise that his custom of praying to his Father is important. And so comes the request 'to teach us to pray'. And so Jesus teaches them. But he doesn't teach them a mechanism. He teaches them about organic prayer. Prayer that comes from wanting nothing more than the hallowing of God's name. Prayer that is not self seeking, or trying to impress others, or trying to leverage God. But prayer that has God at the centre. The authentic Jesus - Jesus at a dinner party Luke 7:36-50

Podcast Summaryexpository sermons, on the whole, from our weekly bible talks at church in Broome, Australia. About Broome Anglican ChurchBroome Anglican Church is a bunch of people in Broome, Western Australia, who have staked our lives on the message about Jesus. The medium of this message is the Bible, which, we are persuaded, is written by humans over about 1200 years, as they were moved by God. It is ultimately authored by God, although without destroying its human authorship. As a group, we at Broome Anglican Church are from different backgrounds, but we share the belief that God so wanted us in his family, that he was willing for his Son to die so we wouldn't be excluded. Although God made this world and all that is in it, we don't treat him with the honour and respect he deserves. Sometimes we do this explicitly, other times we even use religion to keep God at arm's length. But God is not indifferent to our rejection of him. We believe that God has loved us so much that he sent Jesus to die for us. Jesus' death was about defeating death once and for all, by becoming the one true sacrifice for our rejection of God, who is the source of life. In his death, Jesus took on himself all that God hates about the way we treat him and his world. And Jesus exhausted God's anger in his body, as he hung on the cross. God raised him up on the third day, pleased with all that Jesus had done. Jesus is now the ruler of God's kingdom. In the cross, then, God's justice and God's mercy meet. As a consequence of Jesus' death as God's sacrifice for sin, we can be forgiven, and know new life. So, convinced of God's love for us in Jesus, we are committed to learning how to love each other, and, as we have opportunity, the whole world. We believe that Jesus will return to take us to be with him forever in his new creation. The last book of the Bible says of Jesus, anticipating the end, He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. We believe that God is at work in this world today, in the intervening period between Jesus' death and his return, bringing people into his family. The normal way this happens is by people hearing the message about Jesus, and staking their lives on this message. This same word strengthens and keeps those who have already put their trust in Jesus, as we are reminded of Jesus' love for us and warned against departing from the love God has for us. Followers
